Israeli paper publishes Obama's stolen Western Wall prayer
Israel Herald Saturday 26th July, 2008 (ANI)
New York, July 26 : Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama wrote a prayer in Jerusalem this week - and left it at Judaism's holiest of sites, the Western Wall. As Barack placed his prayer in the cracks of the Western Wall, someone came from behind and stole it.
That pilfered prayer has now been published in an Israeli newspaper, exposing to the world a personal plea for God to help him "guard against pride and despair."
Obama left the handwritten note during his trip to the 2,000-year-old solemn site in Jerusalem on Thursday, following a tradition of visitors to the wall leaving messages of prayer in its cracks.
But in a move that many said was unheard of, the note was stolen from the wall, reportedly by a Jewish seminary student and then published in the Israeli paper "Maariv".
"Lord - Protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will," Obama wrote on the stationery from the King David Hotel, where he stayed.
Shmuel Rabinovitz, the rabbi in charge of the wall, has slammed Maariv for publishing the text, the New York Post reports.
He told Israeli Army Radio, "The notes placed between the stones of the Western Wall are between a person and his maker. It is forbidden to read them or make any use of them . . . [this] damages the Western Wall and damages the personal, deep part of every one of us that we keep to ourselves."
The site, the holiest in Judaism, is the only remaining piece of the outer wall of the second Jewish temple, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.
The Obama campaign has declined to comment on the note.

| "help me guard against pride and despair."
After the near-Biblical things he’s been spouting, this is a breath of fresh air. But how interesting and convenient it is that his little paper was taken and publicized. You’d think it was a subtle and clever PR move. |

can you possibly sink lower?this is such a base and tasteless thing to do, no matter how public a figure he is, at least respect his right to worship in private
@jms you are of an extremely ignorant and malignant mindset, get over yourself and grant the man his right to pray for whoever he wants to *GAWD* |

Unjustified disrespectPerhaps if Obama’s prayer had been something exceptionally shocking or unusual one might be forgiven for breaching his privacy like this–but it’s not like he was praying for anything particularly newsworthy. Why be so disrespectful of his privacy for something so inconsequential? Eavesdropping on someone’s prayers is a bit like watching them on the john. |

Sure, you would too, right?JMS, I’m sure your prayer would have been about all of those things, right? I don’t think your prayer would have fit through the cracks in the wall. Give him a break, if he had written any of those things we’d all be saying that he did it on purpose as a good PR move. Were I in front of the wall right now, I think I’d only be praying for myself and my family as well. When it really comes down to it, my family is still more important to me than the state of the nation, no matter how bad it gets. |

jmsTo jms
firstly you judge a prayer??
what i got from your post...
many christains, pray for the “world” but do nothing. At least
here is an individual putting himself at the forefront to trying to make a difference. Is he perfect..NO
because of the position he is in, the most likely sacrifice is the relationship with his family unit. i understand that...
i find your comments are the very least immature and shameful.
i’m questioning your motives and your so called faith for dismissing this individuals prayer. |

This is half a story! What this site doesn’t say is that Obama said it was okay for the press to take his prayer and publicize it! There is another publication that he already had planned for someone to take his prayer, and then have them publish it for all to read. |

So much for the Kotel GuardHaving been physically threated for worshiping in a mixed minyan in the area beyond the Kotel, it is great to see that the shomrei hakotel rabbinate has its priorities straight. No men and women praying together, but stealing a prayer...oh well, whoops...missed that one, naughty naughty! Way to go Chief Rabbinate! |
